Chip Saltsman, senior adviser to Pence’s nonprofit group, Advancing American Freedom, guides Pence’s path in Iowa and other early states. Saltsman was the campaign manager for Mike Huckabee’s 2008 presidential campaign, which included winning the Iowa caucuses.
Pence – who took on former President Donald Trump in a split-screen high-level political address in Washington this week – also lavished attention on South Carolina and New Hampshire. He said he would assess his own potential presidential bid regardless of what his former boss does.
The trip to Iowa comes as Pence has demonstrated his willingness to fend off Trump in a series of primaries, going up against Trump-endorsed candidates for governor in Georgia, Arizona and, this week, Wisconsin. On Wednesday, Pence announced his support for Rebecca Kleefisch, the former lieutenant governor under Scott Walker, in his upcoming Aug. 9 primary for governor, while Trump endorsed construction manager Tim Michels.
