Pelosi tears up GOP ‘blackmail’ by linking border vote to pandemic aid

Senate Republicans have been pushing for a vote to overturn Biden’s decision to roll back public health-related border restraints, known as Title 42. Some senior Senate Democrats have said they’re ready to give Republicans vote to release pandemic money, but there are fears a vote could pass.

Asked about the border’s connection to Covid aid, Pelosi said Biden “made the right decision” to backtrack on politics.

“I don’t know why 42 would be there. It has nothing to do with it,” Pelosi said.

After backing down on attempts to pass it as part of government funding legislation in March, Democrats have sought to enact pandemic relief alongside $40 billion in aid to Ukraine, which has passed the House last week but has since encountered roadblocks in the Senate that will push its passage later this week.

Democrats have opted to drop efforts to tie the two together with fast-dwindling aid to Ukraine and GOP resistance to additional pandemic money, though the government aid bill Ukraine remains blocked in the Senate. (It should pass this week.)

Pelosi hit out at Republicans for delaying pandemic aid amid concerns about new variants and the nation surpassing one million coronavirus deaths.

“You would think Republicans would take that into consideration,” she said.

“They couldn’t pass the Ukraine bill as senators went to Ukraine empty-handed with a promise,” Pelosi added, referring to the visit of Senate Minority Leader Mitch. McConnell, in Kyiv over the weekend. “We passed the bill.”
