Messages of support poured in from all corners of the footballing world, with Neymar and his Brazilian team-mates unfurling a huge banner in tribute to Pele after their victory over South Korea in the Round of 16 of the World Cup.

Fans also held up their own banner, featuring an image of Pelé with the number 10 on his back and the message: “Get Well Soon”.

The 82-year-old’s health sparked serious concerns when Brazilian media reported that he had been transferred to palliative care.

However, an update from doctors on his treatment for colon cancer was followed by a post on Pele’s Instagram page saying he was “strong” and calling for calm.
