Omar calls for action following Islamophobic remarks by far-right MP

DENVER (AP) – Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota on Friday called on House leaders to take “appropriate action” against Colorado Republican Representative Lauren Boebert for using anti-Muslim language in describing a recent meeting she had with Omar at the United States Capitol.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic House leaders have asked Boebert to withdraw his comments.

According to a Video clip Posted by a Twitter account called PatriotTakes, Boebert made the remarks while on vacation. In it, she says that she and a member of staff were taking a Capitol elevator when she saw an alarmed Capitol policeman running towards them. She said she turned to her left and saw Omar standing next to them.

”“ Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine, ”Boebert recalls, drawing laughter from his audience. “And I said, ‘Oh listen, the jihad team decided to report to work today. “

Omar publicly urged Pelosi and GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to discipline Boebert.

“To say that I am a suicide bomber is not a question of laughing” Omar tweeted. ” @GOPLeader and @SpeakerPelosi need to take the appropriate measures, normalization of this sectarianism puts not only my life, but that of all Muslims. Anti-Muslim sectarianism has no place in Congress.

Boebert became a partisan lightning rod during his first term in Congress, insisting on his right to bring a gun to House floors, voting to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory and maintaining a fiery presence on the networks social policies in which she insists on Biden and Democrats lead the country towards socialism.

Pelosi and other top House Democrats called on Boebert in a statement later Friday to “withdraw these comments entirely and refrain from making similar ones in the future.” They also demanded that the Republican leaders “address this priority with the member and finally take concrete measures to fight against racism”.

Omar said Thursday that Boebert made the story.

“In fact, this buffoon looks down when she sees me at the Capitol, this whole thing is made up,” Omar tweeted. “Sad, she thinks sectarianism has its influence. “

Boebert tweeted earlier on Friday that “I apologize to all members of the Muslim community that I have offended with my comment on Representative Omar.” I contacted his office to speak to him directly. There are a lot of political differences to focus on without this unnecessary distraction. “

McCarthy’s offices did not immediately respond to requests for comment by email and phone on Friday evening. Phone calls and emails seeking comments from Boebert and Omar were also not immediately returned.

The Council on US-Islamic Relations condemned Boebert’s comments in a statement urging McCarthy and other Republican leaders to reject Boebert’s comments.

He said Boebert’s allusion to a backpack is “Islamophobic defamation that all Muslims are terrorists”, as well as his use of the term “jihad squad”.

Omar and Democratic Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib sometimes refer to themselves as “the team”.
