Olivier Giroud proves age is just a number as the French star takes on Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe for the World Cup Golden Boot and the former Chelsea boss says the veteran “s ‘train like a 20 year old’

Olivier Giroud proves that age is just a number as he continues to prove himself at the highest level.

The 36-year-old led for France at the World Cup in Qatar where he became his country’s top scorer with 53 goals.

In Qatar, he has scored four goals in four games, level with Lionel Messi and one behind Blues team-mate Kylian Mbappe who has five so far.

His fourth of the tournament was the goal that broke England’s hearts and it appeared coach Didier Deschamps was actually seconds away from replacing the former Arsenal and Chelsea star.

Banging them for fun at the age of 36 is very impressive, but it’s not just a matter of luck.

Giroud prides himself on his physical conditioning with an incredibly strict diet designed to keep him in peak physical condition.

Along with avoiding processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy oils, her diet includes plenty of lean meat, fish, and high-energy carbohydrates.

He also trains with real intensity, working on an individual training plan that only allows him one day off where exercises vary from cardio when he’s not playing, to weights, pull-ups, curls and squats from slits.

All this on top of his mandatory workload given to him by his employer, AC Milan.

As a result, Giroud continues to be the best player at the highest level in the game, leading Thomas Tuchel to praise the striker in February 2021 for training ‘like a 20-year-old’.

Speaking during their spell at Chelsea, Tuchel – then Blues boss – said: “If you see him on a daily basis, you can’t be surprised.

“He is totally fit, his body is fit and his physique is top notch.

“Mentally, I really feel that he enjoys being a professional football player at this level every day and that’s the level he has to reach.

“He trains like a 20-year-old, like a 24-year-old.

“He’s a guy who has a good mix of seriousness and joy in training. He’s always positive and that’s an important factor for the group.

“He starts, when he comes off the bench, he has all these qualities and it’s good like that.”

Giroud is potentially two games away from helping France to back-to-back World Cup wins.

However, according to the AC Milan striker, his age is doing nothing to slow him down as he continues to defy expectations.

“I feel very good. I think my football is interesting. Someone very wise said that we are 20 years old and the rest is just experience, that’s exactly how it is.

“I feel like I’m 20 years old. That’s how I play when I’m on the pitch, a young player who wants to compete. At some point my body will say stop, but for now it is with me on the journey.

“No limits, you have that to show the young players. If I can play the role of the big brother and accompany them for as long as possible, it will be good.”
