Officials: New York police officer drowns on vacation in his native Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — A Guyanese-born New York police officer vacationing in his homeland has drowned in the rushing waters of a jungle and mountainous region near the border with Brazil, authorities said Wednesday.

Police said Gladstone Hayne, 43, and the mother of his children were swimming at Orinduik Falls in the heavily forested area of ​​Potaro when he was taken away on Sunday.

Police spokesman Mark Ramotar said Hayne’s body was found by a search party on Wednesday morning, but he could not give further details.

Hayne was a 17-year New York City police veteran and the son of a former Guyanese police officer, officials said.
