Official ‘no longer employed’ at US Embassy in London for supporting England at World Cup

An official “is no longer employed at the US Embassy in London”, after declaring his support for England ahead of Friday’s World Cup clash with America.

Ahead of the goalless draw in Qatar, the embassy posted a video on its official Twitter account, joking that spokesman Aaron Snipe had been sacked ahead of the game.

Above the tweet, the embassy said it was “sad” to announce his departure, “but some things are more important than diplomacy.”

In the video, Snipe can be seen walking into the office wearing a Three Lions scarf, where he receives disgusted looks from a few colleagues.

As he reached his office, with English flags hanging, someone had printed letters spelling out ‘traitor’ and stuck them on the glass next to stars and stripes.

A colleague then walks in and tells him that “HR called” and they want to see him “now”.

The video then cuts to Snipe being scolded.

“Listen man, I don’t know why I have to be the one to remind you, but you’re an American. You work for the US Embassy. You can’t support England,” an unnamed man told him. “I’m going to need you to remove these decorations.” Take that shirt off. And I don’t want to have to call you back here.

Standing, Snipe replies, “Okay. Good conversation.

On his way out, he takes off his England home shirt, to reveal he has an away shirt underneath.

A line then appears saying, “Aaron Snipe is no longer employed by the United States Embassy in London.”

Among those who responded were Lady Karen Piercethe British Ambassador to the United States and the former President of the United Nations Security Council.

“He can be our new Sports Attaché @UKinUSA,” she tweeted. Jane Hartley, the US Ambassador to the UK, replied: “You can have it.”

Some might say the video was more entertaining than the game, which USA dominated but ended in a scoreless tie.

A well-organized USA side pressed and frustrated England well, and could be disappointed in the end after creating the best chances of the match.

The United States, with two points after two draws, are in third place in Group B, behind England and Iran, who earlier in the day secured a stunning win over Wales.

The Americans complete Tuesday’s group match against Iran, and a victory over Team Melli would guarantee nothing worse than a second-place finish and progress in the United States.
