BELMONT, Bronx (WABC) – A 23-year-old man is hospitalized in police custody after authorities said he shot and injured two NYPD officers during a clash in the Bronx on Wednesday night.

This happened on 187th Street East and Beaumont Avenue in the Belmont section around 8:15 pm Wednesday.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said police received a 911 call regarding a man with a gun at the scene.

Two officers responded and surveillance video shows what happened when they arrived.

The officers confront the suspect, whom they recognize from the description given to them.

The suspect grabs a gun and a fight ensues, in which the suspect shoots the officers.

A female officer, a one-year veteran of the force who also serves in the US Air Force reserves, was shot twice in the upper right arm.

The second officer, an 8-year-old veteran, was shot in the right armpit, the bullet coming out of his left chest.

The policewoman retaliates by firing five times, and the suspect receives three bullets.

All three were taken to Saint-Barnabé hospital.

The officers and the suspect should survive.

The policewoman is expected to be discharged from the hospital after 11 a.m. on Thursday.

The other officer “is probably going to have to spend a few days in the hospital,” Shea said.

“We have a lot to be grateful for,” added the commissioner, citing no loss of life in the incident.

Police recovered the suspect’s weapon from the scene.

They said the gun was reported stolen in Georgia and the suspect was a known career criminal.
