NYC Crime: Man pushing walker had $13 stolen from teenage boy in Bronx apartment elevator

HUNTS POINT, The Bronx (WABC) — A man speaks out after his Bronx building’s elevator was robbed. The suspect, according to police, pulled out a knife.

For Rubin Garcia, 69, it was a close call. Garcia, who uses a walker, was robbed in the elevator of her apartment on Bryant Avenue on Friday night.

“When I walked into the building, he held the door, I walked in,” Garcia said.

Surveillance video shows the teenager waiting for Garcia to collect his mail. Once the elevator opened, the 14-year-old quickly made his move from behind.

“When I pressed the button to take the elevator, he put his foot in the elevator, then he asked me if I had any money,” says Garcia.

The suspect had a knife and went straight into Garcia’s pockets.

“He put his hands in my front pockets and he took the money,” Garcia added.

It wasn’t enough – the teenager inspected Garcia’s walker further while using his foot to hold the elevator door.

Police say the suspect is now in custody, a relief for those living in the building.

Garcia says he lived in the building for 21 years without incident.

“It can happen to anyone – it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone,” Garcia said.

Police say the teenage suspect got away with $13. He now faces charges of theft and criminal possession of a weapon.
