Nuno Tavares accepts the transfer to leave Arsenal but will play Champions League football this season with the full-back ready for loan from Marseille

Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares has agreed to join Marseille on loan, according to talkSPORT.

And with that, he got an upgrade to play Champions League football next season and a level above his Gunners team-mates.

Tavares fell down the pecking order at Arsenal following the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The 22-year-old left-back joined the Gunners last summer from Benfica in his native Portugal.

He made 28 appearances in all competitions, contributing one goal and two assists, including 13 Premier League starts.

But it appears he hasn’t convinced manager Mikel Arteta that he’s good enough to play an additional role in the Spanish coach’s Gunners revolution.

Tavares was behind Kieran Tierney in Arsenal’s starting XI anyway, but Zinchenko’s arrival from Man City for £30m pushed the Portuguese ace further down the list.

And it is understood he is now on his way to France with Marseille and is expected to undergo his medical with the Ligue 1 club on Friday.

Tavares was previously set to join Serie A club Atalanta on loan, only for that deal to fall apart earlier in the window.

This has put Marseille in the running, with Taveres set to enjoy Champions League football with the French outfit this season – while his Arsenal team-mates will play in the Europa League.
