Ameron Norrie’s hopes for a second ATP Tour title in 2021 were denied by Casper Ruud in a one-sided San Diego Open final.
Ruud’s 6-0 6-2 win has earned him five titles this season, the most on tour and one more than Novak Djokovic.
But there it was completely dominated by the 22-year-old Norwegian, who dominated the game and now holds a first title on hard this year after the previous four on clay.
Of his top five titles on the tour, Ruud said, “It’s a funny thing to say, but obviously Daniil [Medvedev] and Novak have bigger titles, so I wouldn’t mind switching with them if I had the opportunity to change five 250s against the three Slams and one 250 Novak.
“But it would be fun to end the year with the most titles, I can’t lie about that.”
The result propelled him to eighth place in the race in Turin – the ATP Finals which have moved from London to Italy this season.
Meanwhile, Norrie, one of the most successful men’s players this season, is 14.e in the race to make one of those eight places and climbed two places in the world rankings to 26e, just four behind British No.1 Dan Evans.
