The United States and Germany are moving to send battle tanks to Ukraine, but Canada still won’t say whether it plans to make a similar move to help the war-torn country.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly said Canada was working with allies, but declined to say whether that meant sending battle tanks to Ukraine.
The Associated Press reports that US officials have said Washington is close to approving the sending of M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine to help that country fight Russia, while Germany has announced it will approve a Poland’s request to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland would also not say if Canada wants to send tanks.
But Freeland told reporters at a cabinet retreat in Hamilton today that Ukraine winning the war with Russia would boost the global economy.
The Canadian Army has 112 Leopard 2 tanks and some analysts say Ottawa can only provide an inconsequential number without harming its own training and operational needs.
This report from The Canadian Press was first published on January 24, 2023.
