A colorful new coin has been minted to mark the 50th anniversary of the LGBTQ Pride movement in the UK.
London-based artist Dominique Holmes designed the 50p coin, which was a collaboration between the UK’s Royal Mint and the Pride in London group.
The colors of the Pride flag accompany the values of Pride in London: Protest; Visibility; Unity; and Equality.
The transgender community is represented by white, pink and blue stripes. Homosexuals of color are honored with blacks and browns.
The coins will not be introduced into general circulation but can be purchased online.
“It makes me very humble that the words I came up with for the brand… are on an actual coin, in front of the Queen,” said Asad Shaykh, director of marketing and communications at Pride in London.
“This queer brown immigrant has come a long way, propelled by hope, love and this city,” Shaykh added in a statement the Royal Mint shared online. “Nowhere in the world had that been possible except in the UK. Pride in London is very proud today.
