Heavily armed New York City police have surrounded the area outside the UN headquarters in East River and are said to be negotiating with a person carrying a gun.
The NYPD issued a traffic alert for the intersection of 42nd Street and 1st Avenue – just outside the UN Headquarters – and said the public should “Expect emergency vehicles in the vicinity.”
A video posted to Twitter by Newsmax host Greg Kelly shows emergency vehicles blocking the road and SWAT personnel with long guns waiting.
“Put down the gun. There are better ways to get your point across ”, police can be heard telling the suspect, who appears to be a white male with gray hair, wearing a red sweater and brown jacket.
It is not clear whether the object in the man’s hand is a gun, but Kelly’s video shows him holding something that appears to be a weapon. There was also some sort of black bag on the floor at his feet.
UN security called on everyone at headquarters to take cover, adding that they were monitoring the situation and that the “The authorities of the host country are currently on site”.
