New Republican watchdog chairman promises dozens of Biden investigations

The new chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee on Sunday promised a series of investigations into Joe Biden, his family and his administration.

Talking with NBC’s Chuck Todd on Meet the pressCongressman James Comer predicted his committee would launch “40 to 50” separate investigations after Republicans seized power and control of various House committees in January.

His remarks are a sign that the GOP plans to use its new, albeit slim, majority in the lower house to present as many political headaches as possible to Joe Biden as he prepares for possible re-election in 2024.

“We’ll have 25 members on the committee, and we’re going to have a staff of almost 70,” Comer told NBC News, adding that they would likely launch investigations into “40 or 50 different things.”

Among those priorities for the GOP is reviewing the spending of federal funds during the Covid-19 pandemic. And while it wasn’t addressed in the interview, Mr. Comer separately promised to review Hunter Biden’s business arrangements around the world for potential conflicts of interest with Mr. Biden’s presidency, which he called a potential threat to national security.

“Evidence obtained by Committee Republicans reveals that Joe Biden lied to the American people about his involvement in his family’s business plans,” he said in a statement earlier this month. “The Biden family business model is built on Joe Biden’s political career and his relationship with Joe Biden as ‘Chairman of the Board’. Members of the Biden family have been selling access for profit around the world to the detriment of American interests.

He promised at the time, “With the new Republican majority, Republicans on the Oversight Committee will continue to push for answers to inform legislative solutions to prevent this abuse of power.”

Republicans have savagely attacked Hunter Biden throughout the 2022 midterm election campaign, alleging the president’s son is essentially selling access to his father around the world both currently and during Mr. Biden’s tenure. as vice president. Mr. Biden and the White House have strongly denied this. These attacks failed to resonate with voters on a large scale, and the GOP won only a slim majority in the House while failing to take the Senate; a runoff in December could even push the party further into the minority.

Emails obtained from a laptop previously owned by Hunter Biden have been used by Republicans as evidence for such claims, although no communications have been uncovered by the GOP exposing such a scheme in explicit terms.
