New Jersey residents evacuated as 6-alarm fire rages at chemical plant

Residents were evacuated Friday night after a six-alarm fire broke out at a chemical plant near downtown Passaic, New Jersey.

The fire was spreading to several buildings at the Qualco chemical plant, and the entire structure needed to be destroyed, Passaic Mayor Hector Lora told NewJersey.com. The fire was also spreading to nearby Majestic Industries.

Officials feared the toxic fumes could harm nearby workers and residents.

Although the fire had still reached a section of the plant where chemicals were stored, small explosions were beginning to be heard, indicating that the fire was getting closer to the chemicals, according to Lora.

“There have been some bad fires, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen,” he said.

Residents were evacuated from the area near the fire. Others were told to keep their windows closed.
