In August, the FBI raided the Mar-a-Lago estate of former U.S. President Donald Trump, finding documents classified as classified and top secret along with thousands of other documents and government records. Trump claims he used his power as president to declassify all documents he took from the White House.

Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump have handed over documents marked as classified after an outside team found them in a storage unit in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Citing sources with knowledge of the development, The Washington Post reported that the documents were immediately turned over to the FBI upon discovery. At least two items have been marked as classified.

The outside team was brought in after a federal judge asked Trump’s lawyers to certify that they had complied with a federal grand jury subpoena in May. The Trump team has been asked to return all documents with classified marks that were removed from the White House by the Trump administration.

The sources say the outside team also searched Trump Tower in New York, Trump’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and an unspecified building. The group would have experience in document retrieval.

The group also gave the FBI the opportunity to observe the research, but they declined. Typically, the FBI observes resident searches only when they are conducted by another law enforcement agency.

The storage unit was leased with assistance from the General Services Administration (GSA) which assists former presidents as they transition into private life. According to emails, the GSA helped Trump employees rent the facility and arrange to ship pallets containing more than 3,000 pounds of boxes and other items to the storage unit.

Apparently the storage unit contained a variety of items, not just classified documents. “It was suits and wrestling swords and belts and all sorts of things,” a person familiar with the matter told The Post.

“I don’t think anyone in the Trump world can tell you what’s in that storage unit,” the person said.

It is not currently known what the documents contain, but it shows that the documents marked classified were stored in locations other than Trump’s estate in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. When Trump’s lawyers handed over documents earlier, investigators were unhappy, calling them incomplete.

The National Archives has also told the media that it does not believe it has all the classified documents it should have from the Trump administration.

Ahead of the August FBI raid on the Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump’s attorney, Christina Bobb, turned over a 38-document dossier in response to the subpoena demanding that Trump’s team turn over all the documents they had marked as classified. Bobb signed a certificate stating that he had been told that “a diligent search” had been made of the Mar-a-Lago boxes and that the file contained “all documents that respond to the subpoena”.

Trump legal team spotted in DC amid DOJ push to get all remaining Mar-a-Lago files

During the FBI raid, investigators found additional documents in a storage room and in Trump’s office. The treasury also contained thousands of government documents and items.

Trump allegedly misled his legal team about the contents of documents seized by the FBI, including Alex Cannon, a former attorney for Trump. Cannon would later refuse to tell the National Archives that all relevant documents were canceled because he could not be sure it was true.

Trump has denied doing anything improper with classified documents and has repeatedly called all investigations into him an “unwarranted attack” on the former president and his family.
