Nearly half of women would quit their jobs because of employers’ stance on abortion: poll

Nearly half of working women would quit their jobs if their employers’ positions on abortion differed from theirs, according to a new survey.

The poll, conducted by women-focused investment platform Ellevest, found that 44% of American working women said they would quit their current job if their employer’s views on reproductive rights did not align with their own.

For working millennials, the largest generational group in the female workforce, that number jumped to 56%, Bloomberg reported. Millennials make up around 35% of the total workforce.

More than half of the nearly 2,500 people polled said the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the constitutional right to abortion has heightened their concerns about funding for reproductive health care.

Many large companies have since offered to pay employees’ transportation costs to states where abortion is still legal. Workers and unions are also pressuring employers to meet the increased costs of obtaining out-of-state abortions.

A recent Bloomberg analysis found that women in states where abortion is banned or strictly regulated will now have to travel an average of 550 miles to states where abortions are still available.

She pointed to COVID-19 and inflation as key aspects of women’s growing financial insecurity. But she pointed out that the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion now “darkens” women’s economic future.
