Native American Student Choked By Peer Gets Tougher Punishment Than His Texas School Bully

A viral video of a Texas student choking a Native American peer has sparked a petition against the attacker.

In a video circulating online, Shaan Pritmani can be seen being assaulted and strangled by a white student in the cafeteria at Coppell Middle School in Texas on May 11.

The video begins with the assailant choking Shaan with his right arm before asking him to get up from his seat.

“No, I’m not getting up,” Shaan replies. “There’s literally no one sitting here.”

The student then presses his elbow to Shaan’s neck from behind before choking him again while pulling him away from the seat. Other students surrounding the two can be heard cheering.

Shaan’s parents were contacted by the school and informed that their son had been involved in an altercation with another student. The school would have found Shaan guilty. He received a 3-day suspension from school as punishment, while the abuser received only one day.

When her parents demanded a reassessment using the viral video as evidence, the school said no changes would be made. The school resource officer declined to file a citation because the school administration allegedly requested that the incident not be documented as there have already been numerous complaints of bullying.

“Coppell ISD is aware of a video circulating on social media showing an incident at Coppell Middle School North involving a physical altercation between two students,” said Coppell School Superintendent Dr. Brad Hunt. wrote in an email. “Bullying, both verbal and physical, as well as acts of physical aggression are never acceptable and do not align with who we are at CISD and our core values.”

Sonika Kukreja, Shaan’s mother, launched a petition on to raise awareness and call on the school to take more action against her son’s abuser. The petition has since garnered nearly 244,000 signatures, to date. It will become one of the top petitions on if it reaches 300,000 signatures.

“Due to the lack of support from Coppell ISD and Coppell PD to properly handle this assault, we demand that the abuser be immediately expelled from my son’s school,” Kukreja wrote. “Shaan should never have to take a class, interact or walk through the halls with this abuser again. Shaan should be able to continue his school experience, his friendships and his extracurricular activities without fear of having to cross paths with this student again. He doesn’t feel safe. »

“Our goal is to raise awareness of the problem of bullying and aggression in schools around the world,” she added. “All children deserve to be safe at school. Serious repercussions must be put in place for any violence against our children. This type of aggression must stop!

Shaan’s parents have reportedly requested legal representation pending the conclusion of the school’s internal investigation.
