Musk confirms major change for Twitter — RT World News

The current character limit will be significantly increased, said the CEO of the platform

The character limit for Twitter messages will drop from 280 to 4,000, platform boss Elon Musk confirmed on Sunday, without giving further details.

When a user asks him if he is “true that Twitter is about to increase the number of characters from 280 to 4,000?” Musk replied “yes.”

The billionaire has expressed similar plans before. In late November, he said extending the character limit to 1,000 was on his “to do list.” Around the same time, he described a user plea to set the threshold to 420 as “a good idea.”

The brevity of Twitter posts is seen as one of the hallmarks of the platform, with heated discussions raging among social media users over whether to change it.

When it was created in 2006, Twitter’s character limit was only 140 characters for a message, with another 20 reserved for the username.

In November 2017, the social media giant began allowing 280 characters per post, citing a disparity in tweet length between different languages. He also admitted that the restriction limits users’ ability to express their thoughts.

Since Musk completed his $44 billion purchase of Twitter in late October, he has embarked on a series of reforms to reshape the social media platform. In recent months, the billionaire, who describes himself as a “absolutist of freedom of expression”, unlocked several high-profile figures, including former US President Donald Trump. At the end of November, Twitter also rolled back its policies aimed at combating misinformation related to Covid-19.

More recently, Musk released the so-called “Twitter files” detailing the company’s censorship efforts. The first batch of documents showed how the social media giant made its decision to restrict New York Post reporting on a trove of data from the laptop of Hunter Biden, the incumbent US president’s son.

The second release showcased the platform’s concerted efforts to reduce the “visibility” of certain users and limit their scope. Following the reveal, Musk promised that users could eventually see their “shadowban” status.
