Mourinho ‘totally convinced’ by Bale, says Spurs star has nothing to prove

The 31-year-old has struggled to play since returning to north London and his manager is hopeful he can play a bigger role.

Jose Mourinho says he’s “totally convinced” of Gareth Bale’s ability and says the winger’s limited role at Tottenham is due to a lack of fitness.

Bale has only made four Premier League appearances in 2021, starting just once.

Despite the 31-year-old’s struggles since returning from Real Madrid to north London, the Spurs coach is happy to have him in his squad and hopes to play a bigger role this season.

What did Mourinho say about Bale?

“He doesn’t need to convince me of anything. I am totally convinced of everything, “said Mourinho.” It’s not about convincing me, it’s about being ready to play the minutes that we would all like him to play.

“It’s a process. You feel that in the games of the past two years. This is the process. We of course want him to be ready to play every minute of every game.

“He’s a player with special qualities, we saw against West Ham in 45 seconds the positive impact on the quality of the match. He had a cross, he had a few assists, he hit the crossbar.

“He’s doing it better and better, but he doesn’t play 90 minutes, he doesn’t play every game. We have to manage his evolution, but he has nothing to convince me at all.

How did Bale play at Spurs?

Bale has suffered injuries since returning to Spurs on loan until the end of the season last September.

He has only started two of the eight Premier League games he’s been in, but found playing time easier to find in the Europa League. The Welsh international has started his seven matches in European competition and has scored two goals.

Bale played a key role in the 4-1 win at Wolfsberger in the first leg of their last 32 clashes last week, as he scored one goal and another. He is expected to feature in the second leg on Thursday.

His contract at Madrid will last until summer 2022 but he has had a difficult time in the Spanish capital in recent years, having played just 20 times in the 2019-20 campaign.

However his agent, Jonathan Barnett, Told Goal last week Bale is still happy in Madrid and could return to the club at the end of the season.
