Mitch McConnell says Queen Elizabeth in Senate ‘thoughts and prayers’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell opened his doors to the Upper House on Thursday with a solemn note of good wishes for Queen Elizabeth II and her family.

The top Republican senator said in a floor speech that “[t]he Queen, the Royal Family and all of our friends in the UK have our thoughts and prayers.” The speech took place hours before news of his death was officially announced by Buckingham Palace.

He also praised the monarch as an exemplary leader and friend of the United States.

“The Queen is an example of consistent leadership and a beloved figure around the world. She was a historic friend of the United States. The decades of his rule have seen a profound deepening of the special relationship between our two countries that has literally changed the world,” McConnell said.

At that time, his speech shifted to attacking Democrats on a number of issues, including Gov. Gavin Newsom’s efforts to fight climate change by banning the sale of new gas-powered cars.

The White House issued a statement similar to that of Mr McConnell, emphasizing that the “thoughts of Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden are firmly and squarely with the Queen today and her family”.

A series of other Capitol Hill figures would also release statements through their offices.

The senator released a longer statement hours later when news of the Queen’s death broke.

Today, all Americans join our great friends across the Atlantic in mourning the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“Elaine and I express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family and to the millions of people across the UK, Commonwealth and around the world who have been reassured and inspired by her historic reign, her exceptional character and her shining example.” , he said.

Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to address the US Congress when she did so before a joint session in 1991. The US and UK cemented what has become the ‘special relationship under his decades-long reign.

Mr McConnell referred to this work in his press release, writing that she ‘presided over a historic strengthening of the alliance of our nations which has changed the course of world history for the better’.
