A 20-year-old Mississippi woman has been charged with capital murder after her eight-week-old daughter died over the weekend.
Makaylia Shaylynn Jolley, of Pearl, was arrested last week after police received multiple 911 calls on May 12 “saying a woman repeatedly and forcibly threw a baby onto the pavement at 775 N. Bierdeman Rd,” according to a statement from Pearl Police. Department. “When the police arrived they found another woman holding a seriously injured child.”
The baby was rushed to Mississippi Children’s Hospital in Jackson, where he was initially listed in critical condition, but died on Saturday afternoon, police said. The child was named Khalysie Lashay Jolley.
Ms Jolley tried to escape into the woods but was quickly arrested on Thursday and charged with attempted murder and child abuse. The charges were upgraded to capital murder and felony child abuse after the baby died.
She is due to appear in Pearl City Court on Tuesday.
Pearl Police Chief Dean Scott told the Clarion Ledger that the officers involved had not been able to sleep since the incident, which he described as “very deliberate and intentional” – adding that Jolley “n’t showed no remorse.”
