US Representative from Minnesota Dean Phillips has said he does not want Joe Biden to run for president again in 2024, one of the first congressional Democrats to bluntly call on him to step down and a “new generation” of leaders in the White House. .
Phillips, who is serving his second term in the suburban Third District, first made the comments Thursday in an interview on WCCO Radioafter host Chad Hartman asked him about other Democrats’ apprehension about Biden seeking a second term.
“I have respect for Joe Biden, I think he did it – despite a few mistakes and missteps, despite his age – I think he’s a man of decency, principle, compassion, empathy and strength,” Phillips said. “But to answer your question directly, which I know is pretty rare, Chad, no, I don’t. I think the country would be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, and dynamic Democrats. to intervene. “
Phillips’ comments come as many in his party privately worry about a second term for Biden, who is trailing in the polls and will be nearly 81 in the next presidential election.
Biden has said he is running again, and most Democrats in Washington either publicly said they support him or declined to say whether they want him to run again.
But recent polls show a strong majority of Democrats want their party to nominate a new candidate in 2024. Phillips told Hartman he expects more Democrats to start voicing their concerns.
“As we navigate the domestic divide and build a bright, prosperous, and secure future for America, I believe it’s time for a new generation of vibrant Democratic leaders in Congress and the White House,” Phillips said in a statement to the Star Tribune.
“There is no way we can afford another four years of Donald Trump, and while Joe Biden was clearly the right candidate at the right time two years ago, I hope both major parties will field new principled candidates, of civility and integrity in 2024.”
Phillips, 53, seeks a third term this fall and faces a challenge from Republican nominee Tom Weiler. His district is described as a “solid Democrat” by the Cook Political Report.
