Mike Tyson warns Conor McGregor to have ‘a few fights to get your feet wet’ and not UFC big boys when MMA returns

BOXING legend Mike Tyson has urged Conor McGregor to steer clear of the big boys in the lightweight division upon his return to the UFC.

McGregor, 33, is closing in on a successful return to the cage just over a year after breaking his leg and flirting with fighting for the elite of the 155-pound division.

And boxing legend Mike Tyson urged The Notorious to get back into the thick of things

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson, however, doesn’t want to see The Notorious – who is on a two-fight skid – back in the deep end for his comeback fight.

During an appearance on The Fight Card Podcast, Iron Mike said: “After a loss you should do a few fights to get your feet wet.

“Conor, I think you should build your confidence and do what you do: win in an exciting way.”

Three-time Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler is on McGregor’s hit list after his brutal knockout of Tony Ferguson last month.

But Tyson isn’t a fan of McGregor’s comeback fight, saying, “Well, it’s a tough fight.

“He’s a warrior, no matter if he loses, he makes exciting fights. It’s hard to beat this guy.

“Not a big guy, let him do three fights and get his confidence back. With every fight the opponent goes to the next level.”

McGregor hasn’t tasted victory since his 40-second demolition of a battle-weathered Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January 2020.

And Tyson thinks the Irishman would benefit from facing an equally less dangerous opponent later this year.

He said, “Even if he wins, he’s going to get hurt in the next fight and he won’t be able to fight the next fight.

“You reduce your experience, three more fights, feel good, then beat the last two guys are really skilled opponents, now you’re back there.”

McGregor – who is set to recover from the broken leg he suffered in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier last July – was eyeing a summer return to the octagon.

But UFC supremo Dana White expects the Dubliner to be back in action in the fall at the earliest.

He recently told SunSport: “We’re looking at early fall, if all goes well.”

White added: “If his leg is healing well and he gets clearance to really start training, then maybe early fall.”
