Michelle Yeoh and others share their cultural traditions for AAPI’s Heritage Month

Keeping a culture strong can be as big as a festival or as small as a meal.

At Gold House’s first annual Golden Gala on May 21, Asian, Pacific Islander and South Asian (APISA) stars, including michelle yeo, Henry Golding, Chloe Kim and Mindy Kaling were honoured. They shared favorite parts of their culture.

“I’m so greedy,” Chloe said. “My mom will always cook amazing Korean food for me and seaweed soup is a great Korean tradition on your birthday and I also think of New Year.

The Olympic gold medalist snowboarder added: “My mum always brings me seaweed soup for my birthday and she’ll be stressing out the night before. She’d be like, ‘Oh my god, I have to make seaweed soup. This’ is your birthday tomorrow!’ I like this.”

Meanwhile, Henry shared that his tribe in Malaysia, the Iban, hold an annual harvest festival in the summer that brings everyone together.
