Michelle Obama and Kamala Harris lead for 2024 if Biden decides not to run, poll finds

Former First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris have become favorites for the Democratic nomination in 2024, if President Joe Biden chooses not to run for a second term, according to a new poll.

The Hill-HarrisX poll has women leading a slew of other likely candidates, including former presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Of those candidates, Ms Harris had the most support, with 13% of those polled in the Nov. 18-19 survey saying they would support her. She was followed closely by Mrs. Obama, who had the support of 10 percent of those polled.

This comes despite the fact that Mrs. Obama has stated on numerous occasions that she does not intend to run for office. “I wouldn’t ask my kids to start over because when you run for a higher position, it’s not just you. It’s your whole family, ”she said in 2017, amid speculation about a possible race in 2020.

Other likely candidates on the ground – Mr. Buttigieg, Mr. Bloomberg, Mr. Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Yang and Cory Booker – fell well short of the top two in the poll, with just 5% or less per candidate.

Despite speculation about who might throw his hat in the ring if Mr Biden – who is already the oldest person ever to be sworn in as president – decides not to run in 2024, it appears he is not yet ready to hand over the presidential mantle.

Speaking to Air Force One reporters on Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed that Mr. Biden’s intention was still to run for a second term.

“It is. It is his intention,” Ms. Psaki said.
