A Florida cat put the gym-class skydiving skills of Miami football fans to the test when he fell from the top decks of a stadium over the weekend – and was rescued by the Stars and Stripes .
Craig Cromer and his wife, Kimberly, were at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday for the season opener between the University of Miami Hurricanes and Appalachian State. During the game, a cat, of unknown provenance, was seen hanging from the upper deck.
One of those who witnessed the commotion was Mr. Cromer, director of facilities at the University of Miami and a season ticket holder.
Mr. Cromer said The Miami Herald, which his wife always brings an American flag to drape over the railing in front of their seats and, realizing the cat would surely lose her grip, rushed to stretch the stars and stripes below.
The rescue team moved around to position themselves best to catch the cat as the scene attracted more and more people’s attention.
“It seemed to have taken forever,” Mr Cromer said The Herald.
In video footage of the scene, the crowd collectively gasps as the cat falls – but its fall is interrupted by the American flag. The cat falls out of the fabric and into the arms of a group of students below.
Ms Cromer said the whole event was “probably the strangest thing that has happened” since she started attending the games. Her husband joked that it was his “first take” at the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes won 25-23 over Appalachian State. After the game, coach Manny Diaz was asked about the chat. Frustrated with his team’s performance, he made the feline a lucrative offer.
“I don’t know anything about it or what was going on,” he said. “But I’ll tell you if the cat can help our red zone attack, I’ll see if we can get him a scholarship.”
