Novak Djokovic finds himself in familiar territory 36 minutes from the final: a set at the US Open.
Medvedev won the first set, 6-4, without facing a break point, retaining a break he got in the opener of the game.
Djokovic has plenty of room to return to the best-of-five format, and he’s done it several times here: he’s lost the first set in his last five matches in this tournament. Each time, he came back to win the second set.
Medvedev has lost just one set at the Open this year, in the quarterfinals against qualifier Botic Van de Zandschulp.
Medvedev was able to play the first set on his terms, hitting more winners (13-10) and fewer unforced errors (7-10) than Djokovic. But Djokovic seems to at least be in control of his after two shaky opening games, and there has been very little separation between the two in the past 30 minutes.
