Daniil Medvedev tightened his grip on this men’s US Open final, leading Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, and getting one set away from winning his first major title.
Medvedev converted on his third set point opportunity with a weirdly pushed drop shot that caught Djokovic off guard, leaving him to stretch for a backhand that went well off the pitch.
The pro-Djokovic contingent inside Ashe has grown increasingly desperate as their player falters in his Grand Slam bid, applauding Medvedev’s first serves and double faults.
Djokovic is by no means excluded from this match, of course. He came back from two sets twice before during this Grand Slam candidacy, both times at Roland Garros. In the fourth round of this tournament, he came back to beat Lorenzo Musetti, and in the final, he came back to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas.
