McCarthy directs committees to look into whether federal funds were used in potential Trump indictment

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Saturday he was tasking House committees to investigate whether federal funds were being used for “politically motivated prosecutions” amid reports that the former President Donald Trump could be indicted as early as next week.
“Here we go again – an outrageous abuse of power by a radical prosecutor letting violent criminals through as he pursues political revenge against President Trump,” McCarthy tweeted.
McCarthy was reacting to reports that the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office was preparing to issue an indictment for alleged silent money payments Trump allegedly made as a presidential candidate in 2016.
The move has raised concerns among Republicans that the prosecution is politically motivated — and McCarthy wants the House to investigate.
“I call on the appropriate committees to immediately investigate whether federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions,” McCarthy said.
