Steven Bertolino, the lawyer representing Brian Laundrie and his parents told Insider: “May Gabby Rest In Peace.”
He sent the statement following the announcement that the human remains found were identified as Gabby Petito, 22, missing and that her mode of death was considered homicide, the FBI said on Tuesday.
Authorities on Sunday discovered human remains near Grand Teton National Park, which they said belonged to Petito because it “conformed to the description” of her.
Earlier Tuesday, attorney for the Petito family confirmed to Insider’s Natalie Musumeci that the body found in Wyoming National Park was identified as Petito. The FBI office in Denver later confirmed the Twitter that the remains belonged to Petito, adding that the “initial determination of the manner of death of Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue” was homicide.
“The cause of death remains pending final autopsy results,” the agency said in a statement.
Police last week called Petito’s fiancée, Laundrie, a “person of interest” in his disappearance. Days later, the lawyer for the Laundrie family announced that he was also missing after hiking in the Carlton Reservation in Florida and has not returned.
“Please be aware that the fate of Brian Laundrie is currently unknown,” Bertolino told local media last week.
Petito and Laundrie embarked on a trip across the country earlier this year which was documented on YouTube. Her mother reported her missing on September 11, after Laundrie returned to Florida on her own.
