The visitors needed the win to resurrect their title after dropping points to KCB and Wazito
Tusker rose to the top of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League standings with a 4-0 victory over Vihiga United on Sunday at the Mumias Sports Complex.
Henry Meja, Chris Ochieng, Kelvin Okoth and Rodgers Aloro scored the goals that put the Brewers back on their way to victory in emphatic style.
Tusker only needed five minutes to break the deadlock when Meja received a ball from Aloro and beat local goalkeeper Mustapha Oduor with a shot for the first time. The youngster reportedly made it 2-0 when he rose high to receive a corner kick delivered by his older brother Sammy Meja, but his header took off in the 15th minute.
Vihiga United almost conceded again when Boniface Muchiri and Meja took an ambitious step forward, but the hosts’ defense cleared the last shot from the first to the 21st minute. Ochieng finally added the second goal in the 38th minute when Vihiga United failed to defend from a free kick, leaving the striker enough room to find the back of the net.
Vihiga club had their first open-ended chance in the 44th minute but Humphrey Mieno did well to block them just outside the box for a corner the hosts failed to score. Two Lawrence Luvanda chances were skillfully managed by Tusker goalkeeper Robert Mboya in the 50th minute as Vihiga United looked more stable in the opening moments of the second half.
However, the Brewers widened their lead when Ochieng scored a goal that would surely be a candidate for the goal of the season in the 50th minute. He got the ball back, took slight control with his right foot before throwing it into the net to knock out Vihiga United. They could have scored the fourth but Eugene Asike’s header, on a cross from Muchiri, hit the woodwork three minutes after the hour mark.
Meja did well to deprive Vihiga United’s Dennis Wafula of a timely goal clearance in the 70th minute. Wafula could have scored in the 72nd minute when they took a small corner to beat Tusker, but his shot came out of a nearly empty goal mouth.
A dominant Tusker could have scored a fourth goal in the 88th minute but, after a combination between Namanda and Chris Onyango, the former was disallowed by Oduor. The visitors withdrew and launched another attack that saw them score Aloro’s fourth goal in the 89th minute.
