After their last triumph, Wekundu wa Msimbazi, still enjoys a record of 100% victories in his group
Simba SC took the lead in Group A of the Caf Champions League after a 1-0 win over champions Al Ahly at the Benjamin Mkapa stadium on Tuesday.
Luis Miquissone’s first-half screamer sealed the maximum points for the hosts in Dar es Salaam.
After a relentless 1-0 victory over AS Vita, the Msimbazi-based charges were aimed at defeating the Red Devils who had also defeated Sudanese team Al Merrikh at home.
Defending champions Tanzania Mainland League got off to a better start, denying the Egyptians possession. Their confidence level was good and the presence of the fans made it even easier.
Miquissone had a real chance in the game after just five minutes when he was slipped into the danger zone by Clatous Chama. However, his touch in the danger zone was heavy allowing the goalkeeper to make a save.
The deviations in concentration have almost proved costly for East Africans. The ball was passed to Oluwafemi Ajayi whose unique pass set up Abdul Kahraba. But the latter shot 16 meters wide to the relief of local supporters.
In the 31st minute, the supporters of the home team had something to celebrate. Mozambican Miquissone was let loose in the 18-yard zone and unleashed an unstoppable rocket that hit the crossbar before rebounding into the net.
The champions were saved by the post in the 38th minute. Shomari Kapombe did well to pass his marker before his shot was deflected, and hit the post before coming out for an unsuccessful corner kick.
A minute later, the goalkeeper had to be at his best to deny Chris Mugalu whose weak training was destined to enter.
In the 55th minute, Kapombe was pushed in the back to the 18-yard box limit and the referee awarded Wekundu wa Msimbazi a free kick. However, the Mozambique international failed to beat the wall and the luck was wasted.
Chama danced in front of three players in the 73rd minute before feeding Muzamiru, but the latter’s effort was diverted by the goalkeeper for an unsuccessful corner kick.
AS Vita bounced back from their loss to Simba, beating Al Merrikh 4-1.
It was the hosts who scored first thanks to Elsamani Saadeldin in the eighth minute. Obed Mukokiani replied 20 minutes later before Djuma Shabani went 2-1 in the 37th minute from the penalty spot.
The third goal was scored by Amede Masasi in the 68th minute before Mukokiani completed his brace with seven minutes remaining.
