A man was found dead in his Maryland home this week with more than 100 venomous and non-venomous snakes, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was found dead by deputies on Wednesday at his home in Pomfret, about 30 miles south of Washington DC – after a neighbor saw him lying on the ground unconscious and called 911, the Charles County Sheriff’s Department said. .

When authorities entered the home, they discovered a collection of 124 live snakes, some of which were poisonous and illegal in the state, Washington’s WRC-TV reported. The snakes, which were caged and “meticulously” cared for, included cobras, black mambas, pythons and rattlesnakes, officials said.

“Our animal control officer said in his more than 30 years of experience, he had never encountered anything like this before,” said Jennifer Harris, spokeswoman for Charles County.

It was unclear why the man had so many snakes, but he took good care of them, according to animal control officials. The reptiles were kept at a temperature and humidity as close to their natural habitat as possible, FOX 5 DC reported.

A team spent hours working to get the snakes out on Thursday, and experts were brought in from North Carolina and Virginia to deal with the poisonous snakes, according to reports.

Animal control officials noted there were no threats to public safety and no snakes had escaped, FOX 5 reported.

“They were all very well secured. They were mounted on shelves. He didn’t keep a lot of furniture inside the house, so there was no place for a snake, for example, to escape, where he could hide or hurt someone,” Harris added, according to WRC-TV.

The neighbors were apparently unaware that the man kept snakes inside the house. They described him as an “awesome guy”, officials said.

“The neighbors really take care of each other, help each other out, and I’ve had neighbors ask me to say the resident is a great guy, they really look out for each other,” said Doria Fleisher, coordinator of Community Engagement of Charles County and neighboring. “Everyone helped each other out with other people’s homes out of town. Nobody had any idea it was going to be a problem. They didn’t know there were snakes in the house.”

A medical examiner will determine the man’s cause of death, which will be released in a few weeks. There were no “obvious” signs of foul play, authorities said.
