Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) suggested the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol would have been a success had she run the show.
“I want to tell you something. If Steve Bannon and I had organized this, we would have won. Not to mention we would have been armed,” she said of the January 6, 2021 attempt by supporters of the president to then Donald Trump to cancel the 2020 election, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the New York Post.
Greene made the comment during a speech filled with “one-liners dragging the political left” at an annual gala hosted by the New York Young Republican Club in Manhattan, the Post reported.
The guest list included a range of high-profile right-wingers, including Rudy Giuliani and Bannon, both former Trump advisers, and Donald Trump Jr., who reportedly spoke after Greene. Members of the white nationalist website VDARE, right-wing propaganda group Project Veritas and far-right political operative Jack Posobeic were also present at the event.
Republican speakers repeatedly expressed an anti-democratic and authoritarian ideology, which received loud applause from audience members, the SPLC reported.
Several newly elected Republican lawmakers are said to be in attendance, including George Santos of New York, Mike Collins of Georgia and Cory Mills of Florida.
Last year, Rolling Stone reported that Greene and other far-right members of Congress had been involved in planning Trump’s efforts to reverse his election defeat and the Jan. 6 events that turned violent, people say. who organized the pro-Trump rallies in Washington, DC, leading up to the attack on the Capitol.
Greene has also been a strong advocate for those imprisoned for their role in the deadly attack on the Capitol, calling them “political prisoners.” Nearly 900 people have been arrested in connection with the violation, including more than 275 charged with assault or obstructing law enforcement.
