Manchester United must ‘get rid of Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba and more’ as they risk a 30-year title drought like Liverpool with Arsenal closer to the trophy, talkSPORT says

Manchester United have been told they need to eliminate their squad, including Cristiano Ronaldo, but even then they still risk a 30-year title drought like rivals Liverpool.

The current campaign will be United’s fifth straight without a trophy following their Champions League exit, despite having not won the Premier League since 2013, the year Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

United are now clinging to hopes of finishing in the top four after a Champions League exit

The Red Devils have tried to build and rebuild their squad since then and last summer signed Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho in a bid to reclaim the crown.

What followed was a tumultuous season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacked, serious underperformance and fan fury.

A new permanent manager will arrive this summer to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

And Premier League 100 club member Darren Bent believes United’s squad needs a complete overhaul if they are to challenge for a title anytime soon.

He told talkSPORT’s Drivetime: “The ones you keep are [David] de Gea, you keep Varane. You need a new right-back, I think.

” I do not think so [Scott McTominay] is good enough, but it is unique to you. Construction side? Nope.

Shaw and Maguire played for England at Euro 2020 but have been unable to emulate that form at club level this term

“I think Fred is weird because you have to say there’s been one for the last few weeks who’s been like, ‘You know what? I’m up for it’. But I guess if you’re trying to start against and build a successful team, he might have to leave.

“You keep Sancho. Ronaldo must go. [Edinson] Cavani must leave. [Martial] must leave.

“Rashford is where, if the new manager likes him, there is something there. If he can get the best out of him, keep him because he’s young.

“[Pogba] going to leave anyway, he is free at the end of the season. If Manchester United have aspirations [he should go].

Bent thinks United should leave Ronaldo, despite his superb performance against Tottenham

“I love Pogba as a player, I really love him, but Manchester United fans are tired of saying ‘we expect this consistency’ so he should go.”

Meanwhile, Bent has also said club captain Harry Maguire should be sacked at Old Trafford, while Luke Shaw is someone they could also sell.

When asked how far Manchester United are from challenging for the Premier League title, the former striker replied: “Miles away.

“I said five the other day but maybe eight.”

Ferguson has won 13 Premier League titles, but Man United haven’t won since leaving in 2013

Then he was asked how far away Arsenal, the team he supports, was and he claimed they were closer to a title challenge under Mikel Arteta than United at the moment.

“Probably about the same, it depends because they’re already on their rebuild,” he added.

“I would say less time than United because we’ve knocked some of them out already.”

And summing up United’s long road to a 14th Premier League title, he said: “It could take 20 years [between titles].”

Liverpool’s 30-year title gap was then increased and, asked if the same could be true for the Red Devils, Bent added: “Maybe, you don’t know, because I’m sure when Liverpool absolutely cleaned up, won everything, they wouldn’t have said it would be 30 years.
