Man shot dead on beach at Acapulco resort in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Mexican authorities have said gunmen stopped in a boat and shot dead a man on a popular beach in the resort town of Acapulco on the Pacific coast.

Police in Guerrero state, in the south of the country, said the shooting took place on Monday at Majahua Beach in Puerto Marques, just off Acapulco’s main bay.

Puerto Marques lies to the east of Acapulco and is home to more upscale tourism than the Main Bay, which has been battered by violence for the past 15 years.

The attackers then allegedly fled in the boat.

The attack came after a series of killings on Mexico’s Caribbean coast put the country’s tourism industry on high alert.

The most recent incident was a shooting on November 4 at a beach in Puerto Morelos south of Cancun, involving a squad of gunmen who killed two suspected drug traffickers.

This daytime bloodshed sent tourists scurrying for shelter at two large hotels where local drug gangs apparently competed for drug sales.

In October, California travel blogger Anjali Ryot of San Jose, Calif., And German citizen Jennifer Henzold were killed by crossfire in what prosecutors said was a clash over street drug sales. in the nearby seaside resort of Tulum.

Three other foreign tourists were injured in the October 20 shooting at a street side restaurant just off the main drag in Tulum. They included two German men and a Dutch woman.
