Madison Brooks latest: Suspect in LSU student case arrested for alleged rape three years ago

New surveillance footage shows Madison Brooks leaving the bar before her death

One of three suspects arrested in the alleged rape of Louisiana State University student Madison Brooks faces a separate first-degree rape charge for an incident that occurred in 2020, police said.

Walker Police issued an arrest warrant for Kaivon Washington on Friday after a witness came forward about the previous incident, WAFB9 reported.

Washington surrendered to police on Friday evening.

News of the previous arrest comes as lawyers for the men accused of raping Ms Brooks reiterated claims that she was not too impaired to have sex with two of the suspects.

At a press conference on Friday, attorneys Joe Long and Ron Haley questioned the accuracy of blood alcohol content (BAC) results, saying Brooks, 19, was nearly four times over the legal limit at the time of his death.

“The evidence we have seen so far of Ms Brooks running in front of Reggie’s undermines the police version of events, and until our experts can examine what happened, we believe the BAC is inaccurate,” Long said.

Mr. Long is representing 18-year-old Casen Carver, who is facing rape charges. Mr. Haley is representing Kaivon Deondre Washington, 18, and Everett Lee, 28, charged with third-degree rape and primary rape, respectively.

A 17-year-old, whose name has not been released because he is a minor, is also accused of raping Brooks. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said the men dropped Brooks off along a road where she was then fatally hit by a car.

The three adult suspects have since been released on bail.

LSU students slam university’s response to alleged rape and death of Madison Brooks

In a statement released Monday, LSU Feminists in Action denounced President William F Tate’s response to the alleged sexual assault Brooks, 19, suffered before she was dropped off by the suspects along a road and fatally hit by a car on January 15.

The group demanded that Mr Tate use his “energy to fix the sexual violence our community faces instead of using alcohol as a scapegoat”. Mr Tate had previously said the university planned to investigate why the establishment where Brooks, 19, met the men accused of raping her was serving alcohol to minors.

“As students mourn the loss of our peers and fear for our safety and well-being, your administration turns its attention to underage drinking. This response is inexcusable,” the group said.

The statement adds: “These four individuals have been arrested for ‘third degree rape’ and ‘principle rape’; no underage drinking or driving under the influence.
