Grammy-winning singer Macy Gray described her definition of a woman during an appearance on Piers Morgan’s ‘Piers Morgan Uncensored’ show, sparking a fierce backlash after she offered her controversial perspective on affirmation surgery genre in the episode airing now on Fox Nation.
In the episode that aired Monday, Gray said she doesn’t consider transgender women who have had sex reassignment surgery as women.
“I’ll say this, and everyone’s going to hate me, but as a woman, just because you switch roles doesn’t mean you’re a woman. Sorry,” Gray said.

“You feel it ?” Morgana asked.
“I know that’s a fact,” Gray replied. “For example, if you want me to call you ‘her’, I will, because that’s what you want. But that doesn’t make you a woman, just because I call you ‘her’ and just because you had an operation.”
The conversation focused on the national debate surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports.
Gray argued that “the women go through a completely unique experience and operation, getting together doesn’t change that.”

“Being a little girl is an epic book and you can’t have it just because you want to be a woman,” she said. “It’s the truth and I don’t think you should be called a transphobe just because you disagree. There’s a lot of judgment and stone throwing at people for just saying what it is.”
Gray later clarified his comments on Twitter and expressed his support for the LGBTQ community.

“There is no greater admirer of the LGBT community than [yours] really. it takes real balls to be honest about who you are. ‘Woman’ is a title you earn and become,” she wrote. “Just like ‘man,’ there are a lot of women who aren’t women yet and all the girls get it.”
