Los Angeles City Council member involved in fight during Christmas celebration

Los Angeles City Council member Kevin de León was involved in a fight while attending a Friday night Christmas tree lighting event in the city.

Video of the incident captured by a witness shows León attacking a man in the hallway of the Lincoln Heights event.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a large fight broke out around 6:30 p.m. local time at the 3500 block of Valley Boulevard. Police said all eight people involved in the scuffle left the scene before officers arrived.

In a statement, de León alleged that he had been “violently attacked” by “self-proclaimed activists”.

“Tonight a staff member, a volunteer, and I were violently and physically assaulted by self-proclaimed activists at a community party event much to the dismay of a multitude of families and children who were there. to celebrate the lighting of a Christmas tree and receive toys and food,” he wrote.

“The escalating rhetoric is reaching a climax from verbal threats to actual acts of violence and must stop before more serious damage or loss of life occurs,” the council member continued. “Violence is not free speech and has no place in politics or democracy.”

No suspects have been taken into custody in connection with Friday’s attack. The incident is still under investigation.

The beleaguered de León has been the subject of controversy after an audio leak himself, former council speaker Nury Martinez, outgoing councilman Gil Cedillo and a union leader attending a closed-door city council meeting that included racist language. Martinez resigned amid outrage and Cedillo lost his re-election bid in June.
