A staff crisis at center-back has been one of the main reasons Liverpool failed to defend their Premier League title and meet the high expectations set in 2020-2021. They took the first step in fixing the problem by signing Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig on Friday for a five-year contract.
It has been rumored for some time that the 22-year-old will move to Anfield. Liverpool have triggered the release clause in Konate’s Leipzig contract, which is estimated to be worth over $ 50million.
“He’s someone I’ve admired for a long time, ever since I first saw his potential when he was at Sochaux,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told LiverpoolFC.com. “After the issues we had with the center-half injuries last season, it was clear that this was an area of the team that we needed to strengthen.”
Who is Ibrahima Konaté?
Born in Paris, Konate went through the Sochaux youth system and made his professional debut for the club in the French Ligue 2. He left enough impression that German Bundesliga team RB Leipzig signed him to a five-year contract in June 2017. 95 appearances in all competitions for Bundesliga title contenders in the past four seasons.
Prior to arriving at Liverpool, Konate will star for France’s Under-21 squad at the UEFA European Under-21 Championships. The quarter-finals of this competition will be played on Monday, with France taking on the Netherlands Under-21.
Konate will immediately give a boost to a Liverpool side that saw Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all suffer long-term injuries last season. The club took action in January to remedy the situation, acquiring Ben Davies (Preston North End) and getting Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke in January, but Davies has yet to make an appearance and Kabak will apparently not return. not. It was the emergence of Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips that helped Liverpool in their positive end-of-season run to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
