They say good things come in small packages and with Diogo Jota it definitely does.
The Liverpool forward, who signed for Wolves last year, has been a revelation since becoming a Red, and continued his fine form for the club with his third goal of the season against Brentford Saturday.
And that goal, which was the Reds’ first of three in a six-goal thriller, added to a phenomenal record that’s only improved by heads and shoulders above him, literally.
It is in height, not in capacity.
At 5-10, Jota isn’t necessarily short, but when you compare him to the only players who have scored more header goals than him this year, his record is remarkable.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Christian Benteke, Edison Cavani and Lewis Dunk, all 6ft 2 or taller, are the only players to have scored more head goals since the start of 2021.
It illustrates just how much the Portuguese, who has made 21 caps and scored eight goals for his country, is in the air, despite being shorter than most of his fellow strikers on this list.
Jota has only scored one header less in 2021 than his national team attacking partner Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored four goals with his header – all for his former side, Juventus.
Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijinders reiterated this, saying the 24-year-old “feels the goal” ahead of his second season as a Reds player.
Klopp’s right-hand man said on the club’s official website at the start of the season: “It’s great that Diogo has joined us because you can immediately see the speed he has and, at the same time, so much control on his body and the ball. It’s scary.
“He gives our front line a lot of direction and energy.
“Diogo is not your typical Portuguese winger who gets the ball in his feet and creates disruption with dribbling from the outside. Diogo is on the vertical, a second striker in the box, a pure Liverpool winger.
“He senses the goal, is technically at a high level. Especially with our passing game we need Diogo’s moves behind the last row. He defends at a high level.
