OTTAWA-
The Liberal government is giving itself more time to deliver on a key peacekeeping promise made to the UN five years ago.
The commitment involves providing a rapid reaction force of 200 troops to the UN.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first announced the pledge at a major peacekeeping summit in Vancouver in 2017.
The then government said the force, intended to respond to emergencies in peacekeeping missions, would be deployed within five years.
Yet the Department of National Defense says cabinet recently gave itself another year to meet its commitment.
The government has not explained why the force has not yet materialized, even though the UN says there is a continuing need for such units.
