Fernandez was excellent when in possession against the holder of the 49e level on the world stage. She was successful in 66% of her first serve attempts and won 82% of contested rallies in this situation.
The Montreal native faced only one break point and found a way to escape the embarrassment. She also broke her rival on three occasions.
In the quarter-finals, Fernandez will face American Sofia Kenin. The player positioned at 53e rank in the WTA world rankings has caused several surprises since the start of the Mexican competition. She notably defeated Jelena Ostapenko and Anhelina Kalinina, the sixth and twelfth seeds respectively. The 24-year-old athlete also beat Canadian Carol Zhao in the curtain-raiser.
Furthermore, Fernandez is also in doubles action in Guadalajara. The team made up of American Taylor Townsend is the second favorite. The two teammates will face the Italian Jasmine Paolini and the Egyptian Mayar Sherif in the quarter-finals.
