SUPER-AGENT Jorge Mendes wanted Joao Felix to join Manchester City before moving to Atletico Madrid for £113million in 2019.

SunSport revealed in May of the same year that talks between Mendes and members of the Etihad hierarchy had taken place.

Our story has now been confirmed after excerpts of a leaked conversation between Felix’s representative and Benfica director Bruno Maruta were published in Portugal.

On the recording, Mendes can be heard saying: “The president of Benfica insisted that I bring him proposals of 120 million euros and I already have four of them.

“The best thing for Joao Felix would be Manchester City.

“It will be the most expensive transfer in Portuguese football.”

Felix left Benfica for Atletico that summer, while City opted for midfielder Rodri and defender Joao Cancelo.

The Portuguese striker had mixed fortunes during his three years at Madrid, showing glimpses of his incredible ability.

The 22-year-old has scored 22 goals and 12 assists in 94 appearances for Atletico.

He is also a regular Portugal international alongside Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
