Lauren Stivrins and Nebraska volleyball go a long way.

The All-America central blocker signed up to the Huskers in 2014 while in high school. She has been at Lincoln since 2016, playing for the Huskers for the past five seasons.

But there is someone in her family who has an even longer history with the program.

Lincoln resident Opal Stivrins, Lauren’s grandmother, has had season tickets to Nebraska games since the 1990s. She still has these tickets, and in recent seasons she has been able to see her granddaughter. be one of the stars of the team.

Think how awesome that must be.

And while going to games and seeing Lauren Stivrins crush kills and playing with a mixture of fire and bonfire was a treat, Stivrins coming to Nebraska also allowed Opal to see her more than she did when Lauren did. was growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“It was an absolute gift to have him here because most of my grandchildren were close and I was able to witness their activities,” said Opal Stivrins, 82, grandmother of 12 and great. grandma of seven. “And I only got to see Lauren when I was going to Arizona for a few weeks in the winter, or when I went to one of her club tournaments. So that was really wonderful.

Opal’s husband was Kaz Stivrins, and she is the stepmother of Lauren’s father, Alex, who grew up in Lincoln. Alex’s mother, Patricia, passed away in 1989. Opal has been in the family since 1991.

Kaz died in 2008 when Lauren was 10 years old. Kaz and Opal spent several weeks in Arizona each winter and watched Lauren and her siblings go about their business.

Opal Stivrins was addicted to Husker volleyball for many years before Stivrins joined the team. She loved the players, being part of the fan base, and, well, they were winning a lot.

So what’s it like when your granddaughter is actually on the team?

“It’s exciting, of course,” Opal Stivrins said. “I think it was nice for the whole family to have him here. Her freshman year, I know she called me one day and she said, “Grandma, I’m really sick. I have mono and they tell me I have to get out of the dorm. Can I come and stay with you? ‘ So I had her here for a few weeks.

When Lauren was growing up, her family weren’t always able to make it to Lincoln for every vacation.

Now the family has spent a little more time together.

“It’s just nice to have him here,” Opal Stivrins said. “But you also have to take a step back and let him go to college and find his way. And I think the whole family did that. We were there if she needed us. And when we wanted to see her, she was very kind with her time. But she must also have her time. And when she’s hungry, she calls and says, “I would like to come to dinner. And it’s great to have her come visit him and have dinner.

During Lauren’s early years on the program, Opal rarely missed a home game. This season, due to illness, she was unable to attend all home games, but she has all the digital TV subscriptions she needs to watch.

And Opal made sure she was at the Devaney Sports Center for the Lauren’s Senior Day ceremony two weeks ago, sitting sixth row behind the Husker bench and wearing a sweatshirt with the name and jersey number on it. Lauren.

Lauren’s sister Amber is on Georgia’s volleyball team, and Opal has also traveled to watch her play this season.

Lauren Stivrins is one of the all-time greats of the Huskers. She started on a National Championship team as a red shirt rookie in 2017. The following season, she helped Nebraska almost win another title when she had 19 kills with a 0.615 hit percentage during the season. loss in a National Championship game to Stanford.

Stivrins was twice All-American in the first team and once in the second team.

Opal Stivrins loves to see Lauren’s enthusiasm – and smile – during games.

And since Lauren started playing for the Huskers, Opal has taken on a new identity.

“I have to tell you that before Lauren came here I was known as Opal Stivrins, and now I’m Lauren’s grandmother,” Opal Stivrins said. “People know. Most of my friends keep all the newspaper clippings for me. And I get a lot of texts and stuff. When I’m home for games, I have a few friends who are avid volleyball fans, and they text me all the time.
