Kubrat Pulev beats former UFC Champion Frank Mir with KO ‘Mortal Kombat’ to bounce back from loss of Anthony Joshua and could Joe Joyce be next?

Kubrat Pulev left former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir seemingly frozen in time with a clubbed right hand in their Triad Combat Rules fight on Saturday night.

The Bulgarian heavyweight, who hasn’t fought since being knocked out by Anthony Joshua in December 2020, has ruthlessly stopped Mir and left him alarmingly wobbling.

Pulev celebrates triad Combat Rules victory alongside Shannon Briggs

Pulev made nine rounds with Joshua in London less than a year ago, but only needed one to seriously injure Mir with an overhand right followed by a left hook with handcuffs.

The rules of Triad Combat ensured that both men wore MMA gloves and were allowed to land and strike inside the triangular ring.

Mir, 42, was a UFC fighter for 16 years and has held the world heavyweight title twice – registering the most finishes and most submissions in heavyweight promotion history.

Although both men are grizzled combat sports veterans, the disparity in boxing levels was embarrassingly obvious and referee Dan Miragliotta faced criticism for not stopping the fight sooner.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the fight, 39-year-old promoter Ivaylo Gotzev said his client will actively pursue a fight with Joe Joyce when he returns to the ring.

“We received a lot of offers. Joe Joyce is looking for us, ”Gotzev said.

“Kubrat is definitely not a stepping stone for anyone, so we’re going to pick our fights and bring him back to where he feels right.

“It all depends on how he wants to enter the ring and how long he wants to continue. “
