UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – Khartoum appreciates and welcomes Russia’s position towards Sudan and hopes for the development of relations with Moscow, Abdel-Fattah Al Burhan, president of Sudan’s transitional government, said on Friday.
“First of all, I am very happy for this meeting with a friendly country that has supported Sudan and is always at the side of Sudan. We appreciate and welcome Russia’s position towards Sudan. We hope that our relations will develop so as to achieve the goals,” Burhan said. said during the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Lavrov, for his part, told Burhan that Moscow is ready to support the normalization of the situation in Sudan.
“Once again, I appreciate this opportunity and would like to express our hope that the government’s efforts will fully normalize the situation, will succeed. We are ready to support this policy at the United Nations,” Lavrov said.
In October 2021, the Sudanese army, led by General Burhan, overthrew the government, declaring a state of emergency and establishing a transitional sovereign council under its leadership. The protests that followed forced Burhan to sign a pact stipulating the reinstatement of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, the release of all political prisoners, the holding of elections in July 2023 and the handing over of power to an elected civilian government. The political crisis persisted, however, and Hamdok resigned on January 2.
Weekly protests against military rule have continued in Sudan, killing dozens.
