Kevin de León slams protester to ground on first day since racist tape scandal

Los Angeles City Council member Kevin de León was involved in a physical altercation where at one point he grabbed a protester by the collar and tackled him to a table, video shows.

In the clip, recorded Friday at a toy distribution and tree lighting event, activists can be seen chasing Mr. de León into a meeting room, calling on him to resign.

“You’re anti-indigenous,” Jason Reedy, a People’s City Council organizer, told the nearby official. “You are anti-Black Kevin. You are a racist.

Eventually, the council member tries to exit through a series of double doors, and Mr. Reedy follows him, where a scuffle ensues.

“My response, to defend myself, was to push him away,” De León said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “In the ensuing struggle, Reedy punched me in the face with a clenched fist, violently elbowed a female staff member and injured a volunteer in front of horrified parents and children.”

Mr Reedy, meanwhile, claims the chosen one was the abuser, calling his conduct a ‘disgrace’.

“Mr. Reedy was critical of Kevin de León’s political record and echoed widespread calls for his resignation,” his lawyer, Shakeer Rahman, told the newspaper. “De León supporters then initiated physical contact by shoving him, and De León grabbed Mr. Reedy. Mr. Reedy had his hands up and had no contact with anyone until De León grabbed him.

Mr De Leon said he intended to press charges and a police incident regarding the fight has been filed, ABC7 Reports.

The dramatic video was the latest development in a tense day of politics in Los Angeles involving Mr De Leon.

Earlier on Friday, the council member made his first physical appearance in the LA council chambers in two months, after being part of a group of local politicians overheard on a leaked tape during a discussion where the black son of another council member was described as a “little monkey”, and officials discussed ways to dilute black voting power.

When Mr. De León arrived for the council meeting, his colleague Mike Bonin, whose son was insulted on the tape, got up and left.

‘The vile racist Kevin de León just ran for council,’ Mr Bonin said wrote on Twitter on Friday. “He must resign.

In October, an anonymous Reddit user posted a 2021 recording of Mr. de León, former council president Nury Martinez, council member Gil Cedillo and labor leader Ron Herrera talking about local politics and insult black peopleArmenians and immigrants from Oaxaca in Los Angeles, many of them from Mexico’s indigenous groups.

In the tape, Mr. de León can be heard comparing Mr. Bonin’s son to an accessory, such as a luxury handbag.

Since the tape leaked, protesters have called on Mr. de León to step down.

So far he has refused, calling his comments a “bad joke”.

“I failed in my leadership,” he said. says CBS2 when the scandal broke. “I did not intervene. I didn’t end it. »

Mr. de León is one of California’s best-known Democrats, having been a top leader in the state Senate, a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles in 2022 and a candidate for the U.S. Senate in 2018.
